Dicky Doo’s Diner – Lawrenceville, GA

Like many lunches, today’s journey began with a quick Google search.  I put in “barbecue restaurants near me” and perused the results.  Forgetting that my company is in Duluth, I found that eight of the first nine entries were Korean barbecue – not exactly what I had in mind.  The one that was not, was just around the corner and a place I had never seen before, called Off Da Bonez.  So I followed the directions, pulled up in the parking lot of the strip mall behind the Zaxby’s and there was not a barbecue restaurant to be seen.  That explains why I’d never seen it before.  So I went back to the well, and the next “barbecue restaurant” that popped up was Dicky Doo’s Diner.

On pulling up, things look promising, as it was attached to a gas station and there were pickup trucks in the lot.  But walking in, it was not a barbecue joint – it was a meat and three.  Not that there’s anything wrong with that.  And they did have a barbecue sandwich on the menu.

They are open for breakfast and lunch only and there was a table of six seniors that had likely been sitting there since they finished breakfast two hours ago, shooting the breeze.  On the menu, they had burgers the afore-mentioned barbecue sandwich, and a steam table with a server fixing the plates.

I ordered country fried steak, macaroni and cheese, and green beans. Each plate was served with a biscuit or hush puppies. The fried chicken and fish looked tasty as well. I’m sure that most of the menu items came from food service, but the country fried steak was tasty and the gravy was excellent. The macaroni and cheese had a good amount of flavor, and the green beans were cooked soft enough with just a few onions inside.  But, oh, that biscuit.  Although it looked burnt when I got it, it was the best biscuit I’ve had away from home in a long time.

When I got there, there was no one present but the table mentioned above of leftover breakfast eaters.  But the place began to fill, with groups of workers, coming in – many ordering the fried fish.  And many of whom the cashier and server called by name.  This may make the regular rotation. And I probably need to try the breakfast.

With those biscuits, I agree. I did have gravy left on the plate, which is a rarity…
