Eating Americana – Peachtree Corners, GA

Guided in by the headline, “This Restaurant’s Fried Chicken Alone Is Worth the Trip to Peachtree Corners”, expectations were high.  Seeing that there’s a 20 minute wait for the chicken, implying it is fried-to-order is a promising sign.  I had seen Eating Americana in a list of the best fried chicken in Atlanta, and thought to myself, “Challenge Accepted”.

Located in a strip mall with a giant Goodwill, the restaurant is narrow, and deep.  Knowing that I was there for the fried chicken should have made the visit simple, then I saw the menu and looked at the food being served around me.  There was a lady at the bar eating a lobster roll – and I heard one server tell another that she had been in earlier in the week and came back for another.  That, honestly, demanded a return visit two weeks later, to try that.

The chicken was excellent, juicy and piping hot, served with mashed potatoes and green beans.  The skin was crisp and the seasoning on the chicken was deceptively simple and represents chef James Chien’s love affair with American comfort food.  In a great review in Eater Atlanta, Lia Picard’s tells chef’s story, so I’d refer you there to read more.  The crazy thing about it was that for chicken that juicy, it didn’t leave your fingers greasy.  Quite a feat.

As I said above, I had to make a return trip for the lobster roll.  It was good – meaty and not two heavy on seasoning, but I would forego it for the chicken any day (and twice on Sunday).  Honestly, I’ve actually stopped in while my wife was thrifting and ordered a chicken plate “to-go” which we ate in the car.  I expect that this chicken would be excellent cold – I’ve just never let it last that long.
