When I was looking to meet someone for a work lunch, somewhere between Duluth and Alpharetta, we had settled for Dreamland on Peachtree Parkway. The next day, we both acknowledged we were merely “settling” (as none of the Atlanta-area franchises can approach the Alabama locations) and I had to find some place else. So I hit my “lists” and in the Atlanta magazine Barbecue issue (from the summer of 2011), I found ‘Cue listed in the Fulton County section (the Milton location, rather than the one in Cumming).
When I pulled up in the parking lot (it took me three attempts to get into the right parking lot. Pay attention to the signage if you go), I was concerned when I saw their smoker. It was by the retention pond, not real close to the restaurant, with a steaming pile of ash out front. Not exactly a harbinger of goodness.
As I entered the restaurant itself, it resembled a cross between Sonny’s Barbecue (think sliced ham with barbecue sauce) and any generic sports bar. That was two strikes with which to start. The waitress (who could have just as easily been at Chili’s or Applebee’s) told us that they had three sauces: a very thin North Carolina vinegar sauce; a semi-sweet South Carolina mustard sauce; and a thick sweet tomato based sauce. I chose a two meat combo plate with beef brisket and pork sausage, with mac-n-cheese and fries. The brisket was very good. I topped a couple of slices with the sweet tomato sauce, placed it on the toast, folded it in half and had a very tasty sandwich.
The pork sausage, on the other hand, was absolutely abysmal. I don’t know if they make it in house or not, but I hope they do. No one should be able to make a living selling that sausage to someone else.
The mac-n-cheese and fries were both good sides. If I was near there again, or the Milton location, I wouldn’t hesitate to stop in and get a brisket plate.
