DJ’s Clam Shack – Key West, FL

In Key West for a day, as we headed out for the Caribbean, we took our day in port to wander.  We walked Duval Street, dodging in and out of shops looking for treasures and, on my part, scoping out food choices.  My dear wife remembered she had seen a couple of things on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and I went to their show page and put in Key West.  One of the three places that came up was D.J.s Clam Shack.  Literally, a shack on Duval Street, the menu was simple: clams, lobster rolls and fried seafood.

While it looks like a decrepit shack, it’s a carefully crafted image.  Back in 2009, two local restauranteurs (one from Ipswich, MA and the other from Blue Point, NY, but both having been in the keys for decades) decided to create easily accessible fresh seafood on Duval.  It’s gained a lot of notice.

We went with a lobster roll, to share, knowing that we’d be stopping for more food shortly.

This was one of the best lobster rolls that I’ve ever had – it was fresh, buttery and tender.  And it was massive – this was the regular roll.  Not the “overstuffed” one (that nearly doubles the price).  My dear wife enjoyed the slaw, immensely.  Was it a cheap meal?  No.  At $18, it’s an expensive sandwich.  Was it excellent?  Absolutely!
