Roaming the wilds of east Georgia, we’d been going from small town to smaller town, working our way through antique, thrift and junk stores. Our lunch destination was the metropolis of Washington. Georgia. We were heading to the Big Chick – a takeaway fried chicken place, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner since 1980, that I heard about on Garden n’ Gun’s Fried Chicken Bucket List. Served in a paper tray in a brown paper bag, I ordered two piece (which came with a roll) and a side of corn balls.
The chicken was cooked to order, so we sat on the tailgate in the parking lot for about 15 minutes and watched the people come and go. Across age and color lines, everybody seemed to be coming to the Big Chick. The skin was crispy, the chicken was tender and moist and it was seasoned perfectly. And that wing? I would go back for chicken wings. We ordered the corn balls, after reading about them on yelp – battered and fried scoops of whole kernel corn, in little nuggets.
Odd is the word I would use to describe the corn, but the chicken was good. And my partner really enjoyed her slaw. On to more looking for treasures.
