As we made our way home from Indiana Dunes State Park, I was consulting my list, looking for options. Headed south, I realized we were going to be driving right by West Lafayette, Indiana. And there was an entry there from Hamburger America – Triple XXX Family Restaurant. That made our lunch choice easy. Located just off the Purdue campus, parking, with a trailer, wasn’t a walk in the park, but we did find a place down the block and walked back.

It’s a classic drive-in – in fact it is Indiana’s first and oldest, opened in 1929. It’s known for Triple XXX root beer (made since 1895), diner-style breakfasts and burgers. As we were there for lunch, we chose burgers. Mid-pandemic, we opted against eating on the patio (the inside was closed, at the time) and took our lunch back to the trailer to eat. I chose the “Boilermaker Pete”:

“a Triple-decker beauty! 1/3lb. chop steak, 2 slices of American cheese loaded with grilled onions on a toasty sesame bun.”. That’s their description – my version had no grilled onions. This was a classic griddled burger, gooey with cheese and delicious. With the thin hand-cut fries and that root beer, it was definitely a winner of a stop.
