Firewall – Atlanta, GA

In a recent Facebook tease for the best pizza in Atlanta, a couple of a new (to me) places appeared. So, when my beloved said “why don’t you bring something home for dinner?”, that list popped into my mind. Realizing that Firewall was right off 20, a decision was made. From their website, it was easy to order online via the ChowNow app and I punched in my ETA as the pickup time.

They are on a part of Ralph David Abernathy that’s been / is being re-developed and are directly next door (across East Ontario) from a Slutty Vegan. Their salad looked like a great start – mixed greens, dried apricots, carrots, pepitas, red bell peppers and plantain croutons, with a mango basic vinaigrette. And, for those who care, it is a vegan dish.

I ordered two pizzas – I chose the Gardener for my wife: fresh spinach, chopped San Marzano tomatoes, ricotta cheese, lemon zest and garlic. Note – this is a sauceless pizza (by design) and I added cremini mushrooms and green olives.

The pizza was different looking, but she deemed it very good. I chose the Cook pizza: a short rib Bolognese, fresh mozzarella and aged Parmesan with long hot Italian peppers (which I had put on the side).

This pizza was fantastic. They are all 10” Neapolitan pizzas and are wood-fired. The crust is firm enough to hold straight out when you hold the edge. And that’s a big plus – I hate flaccid pizza! The short rib bolognese on this was amazing. Great flavor and texture like pulled guancale. I imagine it would be stellar on pasta.

As I was leaving I was asking how long they had been there – and was surprised to hear they had been open for four years. They are open Thursday – Sunday only and are cashless. I said I had found them on this list of best pizzas and he told me, “you know we’re a sandwich and hummus shop, that just sells pizza, too, right?” So I grabbed an order of hummus and oven-fired bread for a weekend snack. We’ll definitely be heading back to try the sandwiches. And I think you should try it all.
