Birdcage – Atlanta, GA

An article from Eater Atlanta about new restaurants in the city, put Birdcage on the list. On Memorial Drive, just east of Boulevard, the decor screams Miami Beach, at the peak of its glory, in both color and tone. Combine that with an homage to the mid-nineties Nathan Lane / Robin Williams film of the same name and you get this “fabulous” (is there any other word?) interior.

From chefs Leslie Cohen and Shaun Whitmer, the menu is upscale Mexican with a mix of dishes from the grill added. We started with the red chicken tacos – chicken tinga-filled fried tacos, served with a consumme (birria style).

Sadly, I was sharing this plate, so I didn’t get to devour all three. And these were so worthy of devouring – the tinga was spicy, without being too spicy, the fry was near perfect and the consumme was delicious. I would order these as an entree, any time.

My lovely wife chose the southwestern kale salad (kale, red onion, avocado, corn, cotija cheese, tortilla strips and a chili lime ranch) with grilled Argentine red shrimp.

She said the kale salad, itself, was a delicious dish. The shrimp were particularly “fishy”, which may be a feature of the Argentine reds. We’ve never had those before, that we recall, and it may be a part of their flavor profile. I chose the 1/2 slab of agave lime ribs, with their “pink” and avocado-tomatillo sauces, with pickled onions and tortillas, with a side of plantains.

The ribs were very meaty and very tender – you could easily peel the meat off the bones with a fork. And that was a good thing, because these are three-napkin-ribs. The sauces were good – they had a total of five to choose from, with agave lime being one also. The other two were cilantro cream and salsa rojas.

They only have one menu, all day, so it was a little pricey for lunch but would be fairly priced for dinner. I’d like to go back and try their citrus adobo chicken, picana and sweet potato bravas.
