Zeke’s Kitchen & Bar – Smyrna, GA

Zeke’s Kitchen & Bar popped onto my “list” from an Eater list of the best sandwiches in Atlanta. On this Sunday, we were heading to Marietta and I realized just how close we were to Zeke’s. I’ve never had Haitian cuisine, but we’ve had Dominican food (from the other end of the island), so I was thinking Latin American plus French should equal tasty.

Just north of where the East-West Connector meets South Cobb Drive, they’re at the end of a small shopping center. We got there around 12:30, and that was just in time, as it filled up by 1:00. There were tables and banquettes and it likely seats around 70. They have patio seating, as well, but it was a bit windy for that, today. I was really thinking about the Haitian sandwich (which seems much like a Cubann) – an epis-marinated pork and brisket combo topped with Monterrey jack cheese, pikliz (a Haitian relish / slaw), and black pepper aioli, but was lured away by another menu item.

Djondjon salad w/ shrimp

My beloved chose the djondjon salad with shrimp. Djondjon is an edible black mushroom, most often cooked with rice – the boiled mushrooms give the dish its grey color and distinctive flavor. The salad also has pickled red onions, roasted corn, cherry tomato, pikliz (the spicy slaw – you may want to order this on the side), sweet plantains and epis aoli. She really enjoyed this salad, but the pikliz was very spicy. I’m particularly fond of heat, so the pepper symbol next to the rasta pasta caught my eye.

Rasta pasta

This was like a jerk chicken alfredo, but with macaroni noodles, shrimp and scotch bonnet peppers. I fell in love with Scotch bonnets, added to anything for flavor, when we had an office in Kingston and they were in an omelette. This was a delicious dish.
