In the Pittsburgh of the South, once again, we were shopping when the question of what’s for lunch came up. I consulted “the list” and checked distances from the Goodwill outlet – the Garage it would be. Pulling onto 24th Avenue, we began to notice cars parked on both sides of the narrow road. Then we saw this beaten up sign. We had arrived.

Open for 30 years, near the UAB campus, for 29+ of those years this was a place you had to have cash before you went. They do accept cards now, but they do upcharge for it. I also noticed you could run a tab, as you walk first into the bar, from the street. There’s a hand written sign that overnight tabs will cost you 30%. Known for sandwiches, soups and drinks, we were there for the sandwiches. My beloved ordered the tuna salad plate,

which was served with all sorts of accompaniments. The crackers and lettuce and tomatoes were expected. But for one who loves vegetables like my wife, the mushrooms, green and black olives, red onion, jalapeños, banana peppers and cheese were a huge plus. Seating inside is limited to ten or so seats at the bar and table seating for less than twenty. But there is a vast amount of seating outside, on the patio, where you’re surrounded by the outdoor antiques and oddities collected by the building’s owner.

I chose a sandwich with all the meats (ham, turkey, roast beef, pastrami), four cheeses, tomato and mayo, on toasted sourdough. Sandwiches are served with ruffled chips and a pickle spear. This was a hearty sandwich and I’d definitely stop in again.
