Westside Bar-B-Que & Cakes – New Albany, MS

For the last 10 years, I’ve had Westside Bar-B-Que (& Cakes) in New Albany, Mississippi, on my list.  And we’ve driven thru New Albany at least twelve times, over those years. But we were never there on the right day. We always are driving thru on Wednesday or Monday, going to or from the Walnut Valley Festival, which allowed us to eat at Latham’s Hamburger Inn, there. But Westside is only open Thursday – Saturday.

I was tempted to try the barbecue, but we were lunching in an hour, so I limited myself to the paragraph that sent me there:

“But it’s the layer cakes that matter. Red velvet is lurid. Caramel is glossy. But strawberry, pale pink and pocked with bits of berry, transcends.”

The poster above is to the left of the ordering menu, showing their options.  We ordered a slice of the strawberry and sat at one of the picnic tables indoor and waited for them to call “sixty”.  They called and the styrofoam container arrived.

This reminded me, a lot, of my mom’s strawberry cake.  The frosting wasn’t as deep pink and I doubt it would harden to the same consistency on day two, but this was a fine piece of cake.  And it allowed us to make it a little further before lunch.
